Every child who grew up in Malnad knows the joy of wild mangoes, locally called kaadu mavina hannu. Small, green, and bursting with flavor, these mangoes fill homes, hearts, and memories each summer.
Unlike the cultivated varieties, wild mangoes are a little wild indeed — tangy one day, sweet the next, depending on when the rains arrive. Their flavor carries the earthiness of the forest and the freshness of the monsoon.
The people of Malnad use them in countless ways — from the beloved mango sasive, where the fruit is crushed with jaggery, chili, and salt, to mavina payasa, a smooth and sweet mango pudding that’s served with dosa or rotti. Many also turn them into pickles and preserves to last through the year.
Every bite is nostalgia — of childhood summers, playful competitions over who could slurp the most mango seeds, and laughter echoing through the rain. The wild mango remains, to this day, the true flavor of Malnad’s monsoon.
