Tucked away in the heart of Chikmagalur, Mount Meruti stands tall as one of the highest peaks of Malnad, rising nearly 6,000 feet above sea level. Spread across seven rolling hills — collectively called Sapta Giri — Meruti is a breathtaking blend of mystery, mythology, and pure natural beauty.

The mountain lies between Koppa and Kalasa taluks, surrounded by lush estates, ancient caves, and dense forests that whisper the songs of the Western Ghats. There are two routes to begin the climb: one from Basarikatte through the serene Someshwara Khan and Badane Khan estates, and another from Meruti Khan, a beautiful stretch that passes through old tea plantations.

At the base of the mountain rests the Tapasane Cave, believed to be a place of meditation for the great sage Agastya. Crystal-clear water flows from within this cave all year round — never dipping below a few inches — and nourishes nearby villages and plantations. Rich in iron and minerals, it’s considered sacred and life-giving by the locals.

The trail to the peak is well-marked and surprisingly gentle, said to have been laid by the Mysore Maharaja himself to allow horses to ascend smoothly. As you make your way upward, every turn reveals panoramic views — mist-wrapped valleys, cascading streams, and forests teeming with life.

From the summit, the world below feels like a painting. On a clear day, you can spot the Horanadu Annapoorneshwari Temple, the Bhadra River and Dam, the Kudremukha ranges, and countless little villages hidden in clouds. It’s a 360° spectacle of nature’s perfection.

Every year, local devotees trek to the top to offer pooja to Lord Ganapati at the mountain peak and perform homa rituals at Tapasane, keeping the spiritual connection of this sacred site alive.

For trekkers, Meruti is not just a climb — it’s an experience. For the people of Malnad, it’s a symbol of home, strength, and devotion. Whether you seek adventure, peace, or a touch of the divine, Meruti stands ready to offer it all — one breathtaking step at a time.
